How to make an installer with WinRar

There are several installers out there. But there is one common software that can be used to create an installer. That is WinRAR. So here is how you do it. This also teaches you how to compress a file to its maximum.

First locate the folder which contains the files that need to be added to an installer. In my case it is GTA San Andreas.

Then right click on it and click add to archive.

Then follow these settings:

  • RAR5 (instead of RAR)
  • Compression Method: Best

  • Dictionary Size: 256MB only if you have at least 4GB of RAM. I have 4GB of RAM and AMD FX-4100 (quad core 3.8GHz) and the computer freezes if I push the Dictionary Size to 512. So the first thing that decides how much you can compress a file is how powerful your computer is.
  • Check Create SFX archive
  • Check Create Solid Archive
Maximum Comperssion

Then click OK.

You will now see that the installer has been created and the icon is that of regular WinRAR with a yellow arrow.

Double clicking on it starts the setup.

Now as I was talking about maximum compression, you will notice that the size of the installer is quite smaller than the original file. Right clicking the installer and then clicking on archive shows you the percentage of compression.
